Question 2: is God almighty?

Short answer

Yes.

Reason 1:

It is extremely clear from Scripture.

Genesis 17:1a

When Abram was ninety-nine years old the LORD appeared to Abram and said to him, “I am God Almighty;...

Rev. 1:8

“I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.”

Reason 2:

It is the only thing we confess twice in our creed.

Long answer

I think this is a question that occurs most often when are faced with suffering or evil in the world. It is not hard, theoretically, to believe that God is almighty. It is hardetr to do so when evl wins the day.

This psychological difficulty, coupled with a rather unclear understading of God's almighty-ness, lies behind the all too common notion that perhaps God is not almighty after all. I've encountered it more and more lately.  For some it simply seems as if evil/the devil wins some days and God wins some.

We know that our capacity for thinking clearly is diminished when we greive or when disaster strikes. We need a faith and a theology that is able to help and guide us through troubled times, a theology that is unihindered by emotional distress.

That means that we need to take a closer look at what we mean by saying that God is almighty, more specifically how he is almighty.

Often when we think of God as almighty we think of what God can do, that nothing or noone can stop him from doing anything. That is why we find it troublesome when tragedy strikes and God didn't stop it.

However.

There is another way of looking at God's almighty power.

I think we need to consider that God's almighty power isn't necessarily mainly about running around and "putting out fires" of human tragedy.

Instead, what if we consider God's power as such that every single darkness and tragedy that has or will happen is contained within God's power (and goodness)? He is not limited or surprised by them. He didn't blink and badness happened. He didn't lose the day to the devil. His power is simply so great that even tragedy and apparent evil doesn't stop it. What if God's power isn't about stopping every evil but using it for a greater good? What if his power is so great that even evil can't thwart it? It's like it says in Romans, chapter 8, verse 28:  And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good

That would be a great power indeed, and quite different from what we consider power, wouln'd it? Sounds like God to me.

Thus, all evil and every tragedy is the work of the Devil, on that we must be clear. However, God is not limited or hindered by it, devil or broken creation or anything else. God's plan and God's will can not be stopped. God always win and

His power is so great that even the greatest evil can, and was, turned into something good. The cross turned into an empty tomb, ultimate defeat to ultimate victory.

A key mention should be made of the conditional statement made in the verse from Romans above, "for those who love God".

Sometimes the only possible way for God to turn an evil into something good we must include eternity and Heaven in the equation...and Heaven isn't something that happens automatically.

and then Jesus...

Jesus was murdered on a cross once. That story is a perfect illustration of how God and we think differently about power and being almighty.

Peter called Jesus' plan wrong.

Thomas was ready to join Jesus on his journey to Jerusalem even though he thought it would mean his death.

The Pharisées and scribes thought power was about positioni and authority.

Jesus gave us some instight into how God's power works when he said that he had 12 legions of angels on standby, ready to intervene and crush the opposition, which is pretty much how we humans consider power. Hoever, he showed us God's way and power.

In God's reality/creation power includes also defeat and death, otherwise you couldnät call God all-mighty..

This is why the empty grave is so amazing. Forgiveness of sins happened on Friday on the cross when Jesus said "it is finished".

The empty tomb shows us with blatant clarity that Jesus/God has the power over defeat / tragedy/ death/ sin. It is so great that the darkest darkness was turned into life and light.

Jesus is alive!

Death, pain, suffering, the Devil and Hell have been overcome and beaten by Jesus and He is renewing Creation into His life and light.

God is truly an almighty God!!
